The Red Light Scenario

The Red Light Scenario

Even though N.Z. was right in the midst of the red light scenario laid out by the government, neither it nor the rush of omicron proved to be a deterrent.

Six p.m. and the Honest Liars had arrived at the theatre ready to set up and begin warming the grey matter for the evening’s performance.

But wait! The Green Room was sorted. The chairs were all set out, and the room was ready to welcome the audience. The fantastic crew at 16th Ave Theatre went out of their way to make the players feel welcome. So all that was required was to apportion the games to the players, fiddle with the lights, adjust the music and do some warm-up exercises.

An hour later and the audience began arriving. An excellent contingent crowd from the Matamata Dramatic Society  who are part of the Improv-Ables tumbled out of their van. They excitedly made their way in, with tickets and vaxx passes in hand, to their seats ready for the show.

Players ran onto the stage full of enthusiasm and loud applause, and it was straight into the first game, ‘Scenes from a Hat’. In one scene, appliances written from the bible quickly fell into porn mode as one player tried to explain the workings of a dildo in biblical terminology. In another scene, it was pointed out that the song ‘Ding Dong the Witch is Dead’ is not the best song to sing at the mother-in-law’s funeral.

‘The Alphabet’ game was played slightly differently as two opposing teams took turns to play out their scene using the letters of the alphabet. The audience then clapped the loudest for the winning team of Sue and Mark, who had tried not to give birth in the car while on their way to, what turned out to be, a teaching hospital.

ALPHABET GAME

‘Hollywood Director’ saw robbers Kelly and Matt in a cemetery trying to steal Prince Albert’s spine but thwarted by Jon, the spine cleaner. A simple scene quickly ramped up when the director, Kathy, changed the theme to read like a late-night infomercial. Jon brought out his Glee Spray designed to dissolve any leftover flesh. And, when there was about to be a dual in the Regency version, the director cut it to become like a Western.

Hollywood director

Audience participation is something the Honest Liars like, and having fellow improvers in the audience, was a great time to bring a couple of them up to be in the ‘Change’ game.

Fun ensued as the visiting improvers made Kelly and Mark work their magic on the alligator wrestling classes they were trying to set up.

Change Game

Of course, ‘Pocket Note’ fell into disrepute when Sue, Kelly and Kathy discovered a bidet type contraption that gave more than they bargained for as they tried to find the toilet in the Matamata theatre.

See for yourself.

Another favourite where members from the audience are needed was ‘Puppets’. This time another two from the Improv-Ables jumped at the chance, and Kelly and Matt found themselves in quite the tangle. The antics of the puppeteering overrode the story as so much laughter ensued.

Puppets game

The Honest Liars couldn’t let the opportunity go by and invited members of the Improv-Ables to play a game. They were caught on the spot but rose to the occasion as they played a fun rendition of the ‘Gibberish’ game.

Translate game

The last game of the evening was ‘Themed Restaurant’, and the diners, Kim and Berno, came up from the audience to celebrate their divorce in the Dentist themed restaurant. Minty water was served as bibs and glasses were put on before the main meal was followed by tooth extractions.

To round off the evening, The Honest Liars acknowledge two faithful fans who have been to every show, Colleen and John, with a group photo.

Winding down afterwards with the group from Matamata finished the night off well with still enough time to head off to the local pub for a quiet drink and debrief.

New Stage, New Home.

New Stage, New Home.

The players were excited about performing on a new stage in their new home at 16th Ave Theatre.

The threat of rain was gone as the Honest Liars arrived at the theatre and began inspecting their new home.

Finding an actual ‘Actors’ Room’ with couches and tables delighted the players as it provided the much-needed space for bags and food. Let’s face it one can’t improv on an empty stomach!

Then it was out into the Green Room, onto the Black Box Stage, and the warmups began.

honest liars improv warm up

Being in the Red Light level did mean social distancing had to be enforced. Chairs were put out, and as the audience arrived, they were advised to make sure there was a chair between the groups.

Everyone understood and were happy to oblige, including with mask-wearing unless drinking. It appeared the bar made a good trade! All patrons were excited to be going out to a live show, as were the players loving a live audience.

The music was turned up in the last couple of minutes before the show started, and a general hush came over the audience. Anticipation was high from both players and the assembled comedy devotees.

Onto the stage, the Honest Liars ran and there they stayed for the entire performance with individual players playing set games. The first, which included all players, was Questions. The setting was a First Date in a Cemetary. Needless to say, the very first question was a proposal, and the questions tumbled on from there.

Always a crowd favourite, Pocket Note was in a police station. Kim and Brett were the worst criminals, and Sue took on the role of a social working police officer. Notes such as “I’m pregnant” and “Not tonight, I’ve got another appointment” pulled the game from one hilarious direction to another.

honest liars improv pocket note

Plunging right into the next game, Kathy sent the single lady played by Kelly out into the wilderness so she couldn’t hear what quirks and oddness her three suitors were to have. And when she came back in, The Dating Game commenced.

Mark played an excellent Margaret Thatcher hell-bent on shutting down the miners. Jon, a firefighter, was also obsessed with bunions, and Matt’s hobby was collecting naked Barbie dolls and burning parts of them.

As Miss Kelly started round two of her questions, much to the audience’s delight, a discussion began between Jon and Matt over the fires the Barbie arsonist was creating. It was a hot topic.

When Kelly asked “what would we do if we went out?” Jon quickly answered that he could teach her ladder-climbing to hose direction skills and added that she should wear tight stilettos. Matt simply asked for a lighter, and Mark suggested she come to No.10 as little sleep was had.

It made riveting comedy for the audience and perhaps helped Kelly to finally guess what each suitor’s quirk was (although she did need help with the bunions!).

In the end, Miss Kelly chose Jon for the hose work he obviously was good at.

New Stage, New Home

At the Press Conference, Jon and Brett were confronted about why, being Destiny Church leaders, they would make Prince Andrew their number two. And the Themed Restaurant game was held in a Harry Potter café where owls and wizards flew about, and the menu was definitely out of this world.

Another audience favourite, “Sign Language Expert”, found Kevin interviewing Dr Smiley Jump about his famous marble playing gorillas. See for yourself with this snippet how the players tackled this fascinating subject.

The Honest Liars and audience alike love the new home at the 16th Avenue Theatre. Come and join us at the next show.

An Honest Liars’ Road Trip

An Honest Liars’ Road Trip

It was time for a mercy dash to Auckland for some of the Honest Liars. Why? For more laughter, of course!

End of a great year and it was time to go and check out some other improvisers. A couple of the players had already sampled the talented troupe at The Covert Theatre in Auckland, coming back with tales of brilliance and both long and short-form games. It was a no-brainer; everyone needed to see it, so it was time for a quick dash to the big smoke for an injection of hilarious improvisation from seasoned players.

Sadly, not all the players could go, but a staunch bunch of eight climbed into the hired van and hit the road around 3 pm. Disastrous time for the traffic as it was building up through Bayfair and Tauranga. But by the time the van left the outskirts of town, the vehicles were flowing, the nibbles opened and the chatter increased.

an honest liars road trip

Finding a park wasn’t as easy as one would think. The van was manoeuvred into a park that proved too small, but finally, a couple of streets from the theatre gold was struck, and a perfect park materialised.

It was fairly apparent that a couple of the Honest Liars had been before as warm greetings emanated from the Auckland players. It didn’t take too long for drinks to be in everyone’s hands and so began the ‘getting to know you’ part of the evening.

The bell rang. It was showtime!

Ooos and ahhhs from the HL team as they soaked in the magic of this specially built improv theatre. Finding perfect seats, they settled in for the show, taking a selfie to prove they had come.

Some of the games were familiar to the Honest Liars, and others were new. From the Cube to the Press Conference the Improv Bandits played each game with ease and flow. The polished acting enhanced the improvised comedy wit, and the audience were belly laughing.

The Improv Bandits

But one in the HL group was singled out for the Celebrate Day game. Not one to take a back seat, Fee, when asked if anyone was celebrating today, called out that her granddaughter had been born that morning. There was no going back as one of the Bandits honed in on such a juicy suggestion. The game unfolded with brilliance as the players re-enacted Fee’s day leaving Fee crying with laughter as she re-lived it in a much funnier version.

Finally, the curtain (figuratively) came down, and the Honest Liars gang made their way out to the bar to join some of the evening’s players delighting in their company.

The trip back to Papamoa didn’t seem so long as there was much to talk about, but soon some of the passengers nodded off and left the stalwarts to keep Melissa alert as she brilliantly drove the tired troupe home.

The Covert Theatre team should prepare for more rabid fans – the Honest Liars will be back and probably bring more of the troupe with them!

If you, Reader, are heading to Auckland or live in that fair city, do yourself a favour and head to the Covert Theatre for a night out of professional, fun-filled improvisation at its best!

Something Different

Something Different

Friday night and the players arrived at the Historic Village for something a bit different.

Well, some arrived earlier to set up a table in the Incubator shed for the Test Tube event.

This was a get-together of creatives; all types from artists and sculptors, magicians, dancers and of course, comedians in the form of the Honest Liars.

Fee stayed on at the table to answer questions and promote the shows while the other Honest Liars prepared for a 30-minute taste of Improv held outdoors. Nothing betters a free performance to give punters a feel of Improvised comedy!

The stage was set, (not so much a stage but a grassy knoll), the musicians had finally done their last number – wait, one more… no… one more and then another one for good luck.

Finally, the audience had assembled, and the kiddies sat on the bean bags in the front row full of eager anticipation.

Children? The players were undoubtedly going to have to curb their usual R16 antics!

The games began with a round of ‘Alphabet’ which had Brett and Melissa doing a bank heist. The problem was that Brett turned out to be an anti-capitalist bank robber who didn’t want to steal any money. In fact, he’d also forgotten to bring the guns.

alphabet game honest liars

The ‘Good, Bad & Ugly’ offered excellent advice, including what to do with a relative who was too religious. The advice ranged from politely leaving leaflets about satanic cults around the home for education to redecorating their room with static wallpaper with an upside-down cross pattern.

Three groups of two players were in the ‘Clap’ game and topics suggested from the audience were brain surgery, lozenges and a giraffe. Steve was the brain surgeon, and Kathy wanted her dog to have a brain transplant so it could speak Spanish.

After hearing the audience suggestion of meeting a tinder date in a mortuary, Kathy pointed out that it was an interesting theme for a family audience. But not to be deterred the players delivered a funny ‘Change’ game to the delight of the adults and kids alike.

During this game, there was an interruption. A small dog wandered into the scene and proceeded to poop in the bushes for all to see. Kathy, quick as a wink, rushed on shouting “Hola, hola” hoping that perhaps this was the dog with the brain transplant. She left the stage, the dog sauntered off, order returned, and the game continued.

‘Foreign Film Dub’ saw Steve and Kristina acting out the scene and Melissa and Brett as the translators. The film title ‘I Can Dance’ was in Bulgarian and Steve gave an excellent rendition of the national dance as he tutored Kristina who managed to keep her laughter under control.

The night ended well with all the players drifting off to Mood and having a well-deserved libation as the Test Tube event wound down.

The Busy Month of August.

The Busy Month of August.

The busy month of August began with a show at the Bayswater Retirement Village.

With Covid back in action, it was not exactly a packed-out audience, but a very vocal one and the report back was that the residents thoroughly enjoyed the evening. They say laughter is the best medicine, and it seems it was that night.

The audience enjoyed the antics of:

Fee, Kevin, Jon, Mark, Neil and Kathy as they embraced the wearing of head mics for the first time having to take them on and off with as much decorum as possible.

busy month of august

You may remember in the previous blog that the Honest Liars had some workshops going on in Waihi. Well, even with level 2, the teachers turned up and were able to keep going, due to the pretty decent area to work within.

There were a great bunch of students from the young ones right through to the adults. All were keen and brimming with energy (especially the kids as well you can imagine!). Some up and coming improvers shone through over all the classes.

Then it was showtime.

The players arrived at the local kebab eatery in the heart of the town and made sure they were well replenished before heading off to the theatre.

The wonderful Kathy led the troupe emceeing the show with laughter, pizzazz and a bit of cheek thrown in to the delight of the audience. The warm-up game ‘Categories’ had the players reeling off different types of pets including chilli pepper and banana (obviously not accepted). And in the ice cream flavours out came a cabbage one which made the audience and players alike screw their faces up.

In ‘Foreign Film Dub’ Fee and Kevin spoke only French while the translators wove the story of the two love birds. It transpired that one of them (not mentioning names) “you know I like the rough stuff” as a bit of strangling was happening. However, the blue pills passed to Kevin turned out the be cyanide and the game ended… well with poison, of course, it ended although the audience would have liked it to continue as they were enjoying it so much.

‘Pocket Note’, another crowd favourite, saw Kim, Sally and Kelly throwing their keys into the pot at a wife swap. The trouble was that only Kim and Sally had wives to which Kelly was quite happy about especially when one of the ‘notes’ said “my chlamydia is acting up again” giving her the spare wife. The audience suggestions had the players tied up, losing a blue pill and social distancing along with other great lines as the scene went along.

improv pocket note

Then Kim became Dolly from San Diego for the ‘Dating Game’ as she questioned Brett, charged with assault with a deadly animal – Jon, a cross-dresser and Kevin whose Viagra had kicked in. You can use your imagination as to how that worked out.

improv dating game

In between the games, some of the Waihi students (teens and adults) had the stage for two games. The first, ‘Space Jump’ Had Ethan begin in the Jurassic era followed by SJ creating a fitness centre. Sam then joined changing the scene to kids sneaking out of school by jumping out of the 2nd-floor window and when Cindy came in, she tried to get the kids to go to bed. Four wonderful scenes were created.

Following the intermission Kimi, Lucy and Katherine played the ‘Alphabet’ game. Not an easy one to play, but they nailed it. With the suggestion of a honeymoon, the three students gave it a great twist by being planners for weddings, honeymoons and funerals.

improv alphabet

At the end of the show, Ethan and Lucy came back on stage to be the puppet masters for Kevin and Kelly who were the puppets. The game was a first date taking place at the local dump. The audience couldn’t stop laughing and even Ethan and Lucy found it hard to contain their hilarity as they moved the players around.

There was time for a celebratory drink after the show, then it was off back to Papamoa for a well-earned rest (especially those who had been also teaching).

1st Workshop of 2020

1st Workshop of 2020

The Honest Liars have kicked off the 1st round of workshops for 2020 by welcoming new players into the Level 1 – An Introduction to Improv Comedy.

The teachers, Melissa and Kathy and ‘helper’ Fee arrived at the local café to have the mandatory coffee, scone and meeting prior to heading off to the Jam Factory in time to set up the chairs before the new players arrived.

Keen new players, Ben, Gio, Claudia and Sue arrived along with a couple of Honest Liars Sally and Neil (there for the fun and honing of skills), and the workshop got underway.

1st Workshop of 2020

Listening skills were worked on with imaginary balls being passed between the players as they moved around the room. And it soon became apparent that listening was paramount as a player wondered if s/he had caught a red ball or a red bull.

improv listening skills

From learning to listen and going into the “Yes, and” skill it soon branched out into games.

Building on a scene, Ben and Claudia were on a Tinder date – the very first one that Ben had been on. It didn’t take long before it came out that Ben had been on Tinder for 10 years and this was his first date. Perhaps it was something to do with being a reincarnation of David Hasselhoff?

In The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Claudia, Gio and Ben had to give advice on how to greet each other with coronavirus – needless to say it wasn’t a pretty sight by the time it got the Ugly version.

bad advice

By this time all the players had got a pretty firm grasp of the nuances of Improv. So when the game Pillars began they were all primed and some great storylines happened.

Ben and Sue as pirates went from losing a parrot and monkey to trying to find love where the treasure was buried. Most of the twists were brought about by the pillars, Neil and Kathy.

Improv pillars game

Ending the games were a bunch of hilarious Space Jumps. When Sally began wondering if she should leave her husband, Ben changed the scene to in a gym followed by Sue jumping in and being a ballet instructor. By the time Gio arrived the three players all had their arms in the air, a pose that was seized on and turned into four people changing a light-bulb … of course!

improv space jump game

Wrapping up the first workshop and it was congratulations all around. All the players, both new and old had had a blast. So much laughing and great brain work, but the best part? … New friends have been forged.

BUT WAIT …. There’s more!

Honest Liars has invited to play at the Auckland Improv Festival happening in April. Here’s the link to the EVENT if you’re going to be in Auckland around this time – please come along.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the team to play with the big boys. There will be some amazing talented improvers coming from all over the world, hosting workshops and playing shows. So for the players to have a slot at this inaugural festival is a real honour. It will improve the game nights here in Tauranga – so you’ll get to benefit as well.

A Night with Fireworks

A Night with Fireworks

The players were pretty darn nervous about whether or not they would be playing to an audience on Saturday night. The reason being that the Honest Liars’ show was clashing with a huge annual event – A night with fireworks – Guy Fawkes Fireworks!

Yes, the Fireworks Gala was on the same night. But the players need not have worried as more than enough people turned up to the Litt Park Theatre in Te Puke to have a good dose of comedy that the Honest Liars do so well.

A couple of hours before showtime, most of the players met at a private home for nibbles — a general get-together to get into the spirit of the night. Of course, much laughter and chatter went on while partaking of a glass of wine/beer that the players were allowed to have. (Or cider for the designated drivers).

strawberries and wine

From there the players then converged at the theatre. Most had not been there before, and there were oohs and ahs as they found their way past the bar, inspected the stage and then down into the green room.

Litt Theatre

Props such as wigs, hats and moustaches abounded, and naturally, Kathy just had to try on the Bishop’s Mitre as soon as she spied it. More so as Props was not to be one of the games played and she felt the twang of FOMO

There were a few rounds of games to get warmed up, the last check of the phones and it was then out on stage to a huge round of applause from the audience.

Sadly the ‘plant’ in the audience tried to get some good photos but was unable to deliver due to the stage lights being so bright. In fact, the heat that boomed out of them did make the players wonder if they should have been wearing some form of sun-screen or dark glasses! But the lights didn’t get the better of these seasoned performers as they brought forth their wit in all of the games much to the audience’s delight.

A round of World’s Worst followed by Questions, started the show and warmed both the audience and players up to what proved to be a fast-paced comedic first half. With the bar open for intermission, some of the crowd got a bit carried away and were late back to their seats. Kathy, who was emceeing the first game, quickly reminded these tardy characters that this was not an AA meeting but did refrain from sending them to the naughty corner.

a night of fireworks

The second half started with a loveable Film-Noir then flowed nicely into the rest of the games ending with one all audiences love – Emotional Symphony. Suggestions from the crowd for the games came thick and fast and were on point to produce cracking humour. Two audience members were brave enough to participate in the Change game and did exceptionally well.

By the time the show was over everyone had agreed that it had been an extremely successful night. The players went out into the foyer to meet with those who had seen the show and catch up with friends and family. It didn’t take long for the night’s performance to be put up onto Instagram by an audience member.

As for the fireworks? They could be heard very briefly around 8.30, but certainly made no impact on the show.

Needless to say, the players made use of the (still) open bar for a quick drink before heading back to the private home for a good de-brief!

A Great Night Out Entertaining

A Great Night Out Entertaining

It was one of those winter nights where we all had to wear puffer jackets or coats and scarves to ward off the chill factor.

Cars with enthusiastic improv players arrived at the venue and bodies tumbled out and raced to get inside to the warmth.

It was only our voices and hilarity that needed a bit of exercise during the pre-show games and then it was off to the stage area where our emcee Melissa was tasked with warming up the crowd. She did an exceptional job because by the time the players arrived on stage the applause was decent, to say the least.

The games rolled on with fine wit and quick thinking. Kevin was outstanding with his A.B.Cs and Neil was very brave to be a wide-awake patient on the operating table while Kathy and Sally were the Helping Hands to Doctors Kristina and Kelly. When the chainsaw came out the audience roared with laughter.

A quick-fire game of Props had the two teams inventing ingenious uses for the exceptionally good items we had been given. The audience found new ways to use a croquet hoop and didn’t realise they had the largest amount of smokable grass right there in their midst.

Kelly absolutely nailed her signing ability in the Sign Language Interview game as the BBC interviewer, Woody Spitt (Kevin) posed excellent questions to Professor Tiny Dick (Brett) who preferred to be called Tiny but Dick prevailed. The laughter was magic from both the audience and the players who could also see and hear the performance.

Our newest members, Kathy and Melanie, brought out some absolute pearlers and sealed their spot within the Honest Liars troupe.

No-one walked out and we even got our first-ever standing ovation – now that’s an achievement.

The de-brief afterwards in the bar was a time to pat ourselves on the back for an incredibly successful and fun night out.
