Teaching at the Workshop

Teaching at the Workshop

One of the services we offer is teaching improv to those who want to have a go at this particular acting art.

So after our successful night entertaining the locals at Waihi (see the previous post), we held a workshop the next morning.

Six intrepid players turned up at the theatre ready to give this improving a whirl. Perfect number, enough to go into teams and not too many that there couldn’t be a one on one that is always such a bonus in any training scenario.

To begin the players were taught the real basics beginning with mime then building up into the ‘Yes and’ game as well as showing them how it felt to be blocked.

By now the players were really warming to the improvisation and before we knew it we were playing the ‘Alphabet’ game (not as easy as it looked) as well as the ‘Change’ game. Both these had been played the night before so the concept was familiar.

The new players did exceptionally well. Okay, so most were already used to acting but one chap had turned up with his son and both definitely hit the mark of comedy with their quick thinking and quick wit.

Thanks to the Honest Liars players who were stayed on to help teach.

A Big Night Out

A Big Night Out

Honest Liars set out on their first International debut.

Okay, so not quite international, but a couple of towns away meant travelling and pulling an over-nighter for some of the players as there was to be a workshop the next day. The troupe had been invited to stage a show for the Waihi Drama Society.

Signs had gone up around town, and it certainly had paid off, as they were to play to a full house. Seventy-six excited people of all ages were there to see what this lot of improvisers could do.

Emcee, Melissa got the audience revved up by getting them to start clapping from 1 to 10 (10 being the loudest clapping and cheering they could do) and, of course, at 10 the players all came bounding onto the stage to the full-on applause – certainly hyped everyone up.

The first game was “World’s Worst” with one of the subjects being “Neighbours”. The audience was delighted when Kathy picked up the dog pooh and threw it over the fence, but they simply fell apart with laughter as Neil stepped forward, picked the pooh up and threw it right back.

“Pocket Notes” had Kelly O, Kim and Melissa at Waihi College trying to find glasses and ending up in detention. With notes such as “Time for medication”, “Go faster” and “Should have gone to Spec Savers” interwoven through the plot, the audience thoroughly enjoyed the way their phrases were used.

After that, it was the fabulous “Sign Language” game which is always a crowd favourite as Kelly D signed for the BBC interviewer, Kevin and his guest, played by Jon who was a teacher of guitar to – wait for it – sloths. Yes, tricky as that sounds, Kelly D pulled it off and signed her way into the funny bones of all who watched on.

The game with “Props” found our player Kathy again smoking grass … something she has done before!

A few more games then it was the “Clap Game” with Kim, Kelly D, Sally, Jon, Kevin and Neil making up three teams with three different subjects stealing lines from each other. Then it was on to “Movie Trailers” with Kathy, Melissa, Neil and Melanie all vying for a shot to get their movie in front of a Hollywood Director played by Fee. Finally, the audience needed to rest their laughing muscles, and so a 15-minute break was held.

But they all quickly came back in to enjoy the second half starting with Neil taking on the role of emcee and getting the audience to set the scene for Jon and Melissa for the game “Film-Noir”. It saw the two of them in the local Subway, and Jon quickly established the role as a cigarette smoking worker making burgers. Melissa soon pointed out that Jon was a widower and sure enough the two started flirting until, to the delight of the laughing audience, they rushed off the stage when Jon said he had always wanted to take all the money and run away with her.

“Scene 3 Ways” was set in Paris. Fee and Jon were a couple wanted to find some marijuana – what is it about this weed that it keeps coming up? And then they spied Kelly D who told them to met her at the top of the Eiffel Tower where she knew someone who knew someone who knew where to get the stuff. However, it looked an impossible climb especially when the second scene played out as a Western (no elevator) and the third a Melodrama even worse with Fee on her death-bed.

In the second half, there was a bit of audience participation starting with “The Night We Met” and a wonderful couple, Colin and Sylvia coming on stage to tell their story. This was then acted out by Jon and Kim, who did an exceptional job except when they got it wrong, giving both Colin and Sylvia a great excuse to use the hooter and buzz them.

The “Change Game” started off seeing Melanie and Kelly O figuring out who was going to do the dishes and wondering if they should interrupt their flatmates who having sex on the couch in the other room. The game ended with them deciding to leave well enough alone and just do the dishes themselves.

Then it was time to bring up a couple of audience members to have a go.

Two young guys happily jumped up on stage to give the change commands to Fee and Neil, two pilots who were arguing as to which one was in charge. Needless to say, the pilots ended up putting their parachutes on and were about to jump because rudders and wings were falling off or on fire – one does wonder how scenes can change so quickly, but thanks go to S.J. and Jackson for their input in having into the game and getting the audience laughing and clapping.

The night ended on an absolute high seeing Melissa conduct the “Emotional Symphony” with players Kathy, Melanie, Kelly O and Kevin and the audience. A wonderful cacophony of sounds was the result with the crowd both on and off stage brought up to a massive climatic ending and the rest of the troupe running on to take a bow to end the show.

Honest Liars was definitely a hit with at The Theatre, Waihi.

Age Didn’t Matter.

Age Didn’t Matter.

A mid-week, mid-day show saw us entertaining slightly older folk who got every joke, every nuance and supplied us with fantastic scenes and props.

The ‘Pocket Note’ game saw Melissa as the tour guide with Melanie and Neil, the tourists, on White Island where there was a possum up a tree. Somehow Melissa declared her love for Melanie, Neil was stunned and shot the possum but it all ended happily as the trio departed the island for McLaren falls.

In the game ‘Scene Three Ways’, Buckingham Palace was on fire and Kevin and Fee were shocked, but the news reporter (Neil) declared it to be perfectly okay as it was actually a movie, (although the palace was ruined in the last take) – repeated again in the style of a Western and then as a Melodrama the game had the crowd laughing at the antics.

The pool scene happened in the game ‘Film-Noir’ played by Melissa and Fee. The two women met at the pool where Fee had eyes for Melissa’s husband, Bob. There was nothing else to be done except for Melissa to lure Fee into the deep end as she knew Fee couldn’t swim and then drown her … quite by accident, of course.

Another corker set of games with the audience laughing till the end.

A Great Night Out Entertaining

A Great Night Out Entertaining

It was one of those winter nights where we all had to wear puffer jackets or coats and scarves to ward off the chill factor.

Cars with enthusiastic improv players arrived at the venue and bodies tumbled out and raced to get inside to the warmth.

It was only our voices and hilarity that needed a bit of exercise during the pre-show games and then it was off to the stage area where our emcee Melissa was tasked with warming up the crowd. She did an exceptional job because by the time the players arrived on stage the applause was decent, to say the least.

The games rolled on with fine wit and quick thinking. Kevin was outstanding with his A.B.Cs and Neil was very brave to be a wide-awake patient on the operating table while Kathy and Sally were the Helping Hands to Doctors Kristina and Kelly. When the chainsaw came out the audience roared with laughter.

A quick-fire game of Props had the two teams inventing ingenious uses for the exceptionally good items we had been given. The audience found new ways to use a croquet hoop and didn’t realise they had the largest amount of smokable grass right there in their midst.

Kelly absolutely nailed her signing ability in the Sign Language Interview game as the BBC interviewer, Woody Spitt (Kevin) posed excellent questions to Professor Tiny Dick (Brett) who preferred to be called Tiny but Dick prevailed. The laughter was magic from both the audience and the players who could also see and hear the performance.

Our newest members, Kathy and Melanie, brought out some absolute pearlers and sealed their spot within the Honest Liars troupe.

No-one walked out and we even got our first-ever standing ovation – now that’s an achievement.

The de-brief afterwards in the bar was a time to pat ourselves on the back for an incredibly successful and fun night out.

Thanks go to all players

When There’s No Improv In Sight…

When There’s No Improv In Sight…

I decided to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Birthday 2016 by moving from Wellington to Papamoa.

Once the settling period was over, there was a big gap in my life, as I so missed being involved with my Improv troupe. So I decided to start one up and nearly three years later we have an amazing team of Improvisors who just love what they do and are very good at it.

With many running their own thriving businesses and others being involved in successful ones, we could see the very real opportunity to help not only businesses, but people, to just get better at what they do, solve problems in a creative and powerful way, and have a load of fun along the way. So Honest Liars Improv was born.

We meet every Monday night to hone our art form among a very supportive environment. With many shows under our belt now, confidence has grown, along with our reputation.

Laughter really is the best, and likely the cheapest, type of medicine you could ever take. Take it regularly.
